چکیده

Starting in December, 1996 and continuing through April, 1998, the Tennessee Radon Program, USEPA Region 4 Office, the Southern Regional Radon Training Center, and USEPA Headquarters conducted an investigation of several houses in Livingston, TN in which homeowners had discovered indoor radon concentrations far in excess of their original postmitigation test levels. The investigation team conducted intensive diagnostic procedures and deployed equipment to provide long-term data on indoor radon concentrations and several other building and environmental parameters. Analyses of these data indicated extraordinary fluctuations in soil gas and indoor radon concentrations primarily related to outdoor temperature. Other investigators had previously described the same phenomena in geologically similar areas characterized by extreme karst development. It is probable that the extensive network of solution cavities provides pathways for significant bulk flow of soil gas over great horizontal and vertical distances, and in areas with elevation differences, enables pressure-driven flow through these pathways caused by stack effect developed due to temperature differences between the ground and outdoor air. Limitations of standard measurement and mitigation procedures in light of the magnitude of the radon concentration fluctuations are discussed, along with recommendations for measurement, diagnostic and mitigation procedures based on analysis of the long-term data and the efficacy of various system configurations.

Long-term Average Radon Levels Measured in a Few Days: Implications to Risk Communication and Mitigation Strategy

In the European Council directive (2013/59/EURATOM) the reference levels for radon are based on the annual average concentration (max. 300 Bq/m 3 ). Waiting a year or longer for detector exposure and analysis completion demotivates many stakeholders to give serious consideration to the radon problem and its consequent mitigation. We propose an approach for a speedy problem identification, yet t...

Identifying High Risk Areas in New York State: Mapping Indoor Radon Data

A project is underway to map die indoor radon potential for New York State at the township level. Through a detector distribution program the New York State Department of Health has a database of over 36,000 basement screening measurements. The address field for the indoor measurement data is being linked to latitude and longitude coordinates using data files containing coordinate information. ...

Radon level in dwellings basement of Yazd-Iran

Background: Indoor radon gas (222Rn) has been recognized as one of the health hazards for human. Air radon comes mainly from basement soil and construction materials. Saghand region with rich uranium mines lies 180 km from Yazd, so the indoor radon concentration can be high. Yazd, with population of about 457000, is the biggest city near Saghand, thus, indoor gamma background radiation of Yazd ...

Measurement of radium concentration and radon exhalation rates of soil samples collected from some areas of Bulandshahr district, Uttar Pradesh, India using plastic track detectors

Background: Radon is an odourless, colourless and tasteless gas and it is the first cause of lung cancer among non- smokers. The assessment of the level of radium in building materials helps in understanding the radiological implications. It has been observed that everyone has some levels of exposure to them. Therefore measurement of radium and radon in the soil samples are important f...

Storm-Water Bioretention for Runoff Quality and Quantity Mitigation

In response to water quality and quantity issues within the Stroubles Creek watershed in Blacksburg, Virginia, a retrofit bioretention cell (BRC) was installed to collect and treat runoff from an existing parking lot. The BRC was completed in July 2007, and 28 precipitation events were monitored between October 2007 and June 2008. For each storm, inflow and outflow flow-weighted composite sampl...
